I am an artist specialising in what I term, Botanical Portraiture, endeavouring to capture the innate personality and joie de vivre of my subject matter. I am most interested in examining my local East Sussex flora, looking up close an examining plants we think we know: the innocuous plants and flowers that escape most people’s glance, plants that exist in the fringes of our landscapes as well as our own gardens. I love to depict and record seasonal changes of our local flora. I have always been very interested in bracken and ferns, which is a theme that I frequently return to, as well as a love of lichen and miss which I find endlessly fascinating.
My work is very concerned with time and seasonality and attempting to convey this driving force, whether in a diptych or triptych series, or folded 3D paintings, as a vehicle to explore growth and change over time.
My practise is initially based on drawing, which I do with as much fluidity as possible, whilst keeping the intricacy of the natural forms. I love the meditative process of drawing, but equally colour is extremely important to me and I paint with acrylic inks on tinted paper, enjoying the way that the colours react together. I hope to try and capture the spirit of my botanical subjects in an energetic manner, full of colour and optimism, celebrating the joy and their struggle from life.
